The complete symbol set is made up of more than 250 symbols with a wide range of messages and meanings. According to the U.S. National Park Service website NPS map symbols are free and in the public domain. They derive from Ultimate Symbol Collection, a commercial product that offers hundreds of additional symbols. While many pictograms/symbols available seem to be well comprehensible, some are less known and need to be explained.
Below a small selection of pictograms of the U.S. National Park Service from the November 2018, February 2021, August 2022, and March 2024 updates. The assignment to certain categories is not always consistent and changed from time to time for some symbols. Also renderings of some map symbols changed in these years.
