The ÖNORM A 3011 series defines both the design principles and the practical usage guidelines for pictograms, ensuring that they are clear, easily recognizable, and reproducible regardless of context. This standard provides a unified set of graphic symbols for public information that can be applied in both indoor and outdoor environments, on signage, in printed materials, and even in digital applications. This covers areas as diverse as transportation, tourism, gastronomy, leisure, and public services.
Below we show a selection of pictograms from the Austrian standard ÖNORM A 3011, Graphische Symbole für die Öffentlichkeitsinformation (Graphic symbols for public information), Parts 2 to 11. At the moment this standard shows 172 symbols. Almost all pictograms were selected and improved on the basis of extensive tests. In the near future an update of this standard will be available, presenting in a single document all information from the parts published before.
The standard is available on paper as well as in electronic format at the Austrian Standards Institute.
The involved committee of the Austrian Standards Institute is FNA 133 and the committee manager is Ing. Martin Lorenz, from Austrian Standards Development.
