Discussion

There are only a few pictograms available for the referent Baggage Delivery, and most of them were developed in the context of Japanese standardization and communication efforts. Surprisingly we did not find any pictograms from European or American sources, in spite of the fact that baggage transport and delivery is a relevant service for example when traveling by bicycle, or regarding walking holidays.

Data from research is sparse, as only a single pictogram was examined on basis of a Comprehension Test:

In a Japanese study to propose domestically unified graphical symbols based on scientific methods, the pictogram variant labeled as Eco-Mo Foundation in the table above reached a comprehension score of 57.2 (Eco-Mo Foundation, 2001).

Recommendations

As the selection above seems insufficient also regarding test results from research available, we suggest to develop additional pictogram variants. It will be important to reach a clear differentiation concerning the referents Porter and Baggage Trolley. On this basis studies comparing several or all concepts should be conducted. The study design should also include a Comprehension Test to identify possible misinterpretations. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs. Only on such a basis a clear decision concerning a specific recommendation can be reached.
