Many of the pictograms displayed in the selection below were originally designed by the "Japan Sign Design Association" and Kenzo Nakagawa of NDC Graphics in time for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. They are based on graphic elements selected by "The Study Committee of Public Information Symbols", which was established in April 1999 by the Eco-Mo Foundation, a charitable corporation of the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport, and was co-sponsored by the Nippon Foundation. Several pictograms were added later to keep the symbol set up to date according to the needs of barrier-free transport, and also as an aid to creating an inclusive society regarding the Olympics and Paralympic Games. In 2020 further additions also were considered necessary in relation to infectious diseases. The full set of pictograms available at the moment was published in the Public Information Symbols Guideline 2021.
Objectives of the Eco-Mo Foundation are "the creation of a social environment friendly both for humans and for the environment through awareness activities, providing information, conducting research, equipping, possessing, leasing and offering other supports for facilities which improve mobility for the elderly and the disabled, through solving global environmental issues, and through promoting and assisting international exchanges on a regional level".
The symbols presented below can be freely used by anyone and are accessible at the website of the Eco-Mo Foundation. However, registering these symbols as trademark or design can be a copyright infringement.
