Facts and data on pictograms

International Organization for Standardization: ISO 7001

Below a selection of pictograms from the international standard ISO 7001 Graphical symbols — Registered public information symbols. This standard specifies graphical symbols for the purposes of public information to avoid barriers to understanding. It is supposed to help providers in presenting information in buildings and other places and for services used by the public without the restraints posed by users languages or verbal abilities. Many pictograms of this standard were selected and improved on the basis of extensive tests.

The standard is available on paper as well as in electronic format at most National Members of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Individual symbols can be purchased via the ISO Online Browsing Platform (OBP).

ISO 7001 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 145, Graphical symbols, Subcommittee SC 1, Public information symbols. The latest edition was published in 2023 and incorporates several amendments and previously unpublished public information symbols. Symbols were assigned to seven categories:

Note:
In a few cases numbering of symbols in the current standard is not identical to the scheme previously used.
This standard does not cover safety signs.
