Discussion
The collection above illustrates that one main concept is dominating: the side view of a suitcase / piece of baggage on a trolley. There are minor differences in details and proportions, but the concept stays the same. The only exception is the Transport Canada version, which is also labeled less specific as Push Cart. Renderings of hotel baggage carts or bellman's carts were not included in this assemblage as they are not intended for public use.
Test results found in our database cover several pictograms available:
The results of a test for comprehensibility of the concept (Brugger, 1977) were quite promising with all variants tested exceeding the minimum score required by ISO. The ÖNORM A 3011 variant was tested anew in the ISO 1986 Test Series, an international study conducted in Australia, Austria, Hungary, Japan, and the United Kingdom (Brugger 1987). Comprehension Test results were again positive except for Japan, were this pictogram only reached a score of 33 according to ISO DP 9186. This was attributed to insufficient acquaintance with baggage trolleys or carts among the respondents of that sample. In a later Japanese study to propose domestically unified graphical symbols based on scientific methods, the pictogram variant labeled as Eco-Mo Foundation reached a comprehension score of 43.2 (Eco-Mo Foundation, 2001).
With about 70 % correct responses in a Comprehension Test among Chinese respondents the pictogram of the Chinese standard GB/T 10001.1-2012, Public Information Graphical Symbols, labeled CNIS in the table above, performed well enough to recommend the image content defined in ISO 7001 also for this region (An & Chan, 2017).
Recommendations
Based on the test results known and regarding design aspects we recommend the use of pictogram No 34 of ÖNORM A 3011 part 2.
