Discussion

In the collection above - which is only a small selection of the wide variety of pictograms used all over the world to indicate baggage - we also included pieces of baggage just used as element in other baggage related pictograms like for example Baggage Claim, Left Luggage, or Baggage Enquiries. Variants used to indicate bulky resp. non standard baggage were not included in this collection.

There is only very limited test data available for the referent Baggage or Luggage in general:

In a Matching Test with a set of 29 symbols (Zwaga & Boersema, 1983) the pictogram variant from the Dutch Railways (NS 1980) reached 29.5 % correct responses. Not very surprisingly confusions happened with all luggage related pictograms, which is acceptable as the intended function is For notice in general and to indicate services related to baggage. If one wants to study the quality of pictogram variants for this message as defined before, identifyability and legibility should be in the foreground.
