Discussion

The range of pictograms shown in the table above gives a good impression of typical images used to indicate the location of an area designated for campervans or recreational vehicles and related aspects. The renderings reflect some types or categories of self-propelled vehicles providing transport and sleeping accommodation, and the names listed under Synonyms / Other Terms Used already indicate the diversity of recreational vehicles available. Images showing side views of mobile homes / campervans with overcab and several windows are most common in our database.

In our research we discovered that there is only very limited test data available concerning messages like Campervan, Recreational Vehicle, or Mobile Home:

In a study sponsored by the Austrian Railways and the Austrian Standards Institute (Brugger, 1995) two pictograms, marked with 1) and 2) in the table above, were examined using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure. Both variants were judged as quite comprehensible with mean and median estimation values between 66 and 80. No verbal comments of respondents indicating specific misinterpretations were reported.

Recommendations

ÖNORM A 3011 Public Information Symbol No 140: Campervan

Based on the test results known, we recommend the use of a pictogram like Public Information Symbol No 140 from ÖNORM A 3011 - part 9 or the corresponding pictogram TS0130 Mobile Home from the Tern symbol set to signify a campervan or to indicate the availability of infrastructure designated for campervans or recreational vehicles.
