Discussion
The collection above is quite limited, as well as the coverage by research or tests found in our database. Internet search indicates a significant semantic overlap with terms like Hairdresser. We only included two of the latter as examples.
Of the few pictogram variants we have in our collection, only two were examined on basis of a test:
The later Public Information Symbol No 162 of ÖNORM A 3011 part 10, marked as 1) above, was judged as well comprehensible, reaching a median score of 80 in a Comprehensibility Estimation Test conducted in Austria (Brugger, 1999). In the same study the pictogram marked with 2) was seen as less appropriate and reached just an estimation score of 60. Concerning these two pictograms, comprehensibility estimation scores from female respondents were slightly higher than from male participants, but this difference was not significant.
Recommendations
Due to the limited data available we recommend conducting an exact analysis of the communication needs, collecting or designing further pictogram variants, and testing these graphical symbols using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure and Comprehension Tests to obtain data for recommending the best suited pictogram. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories of the Comprehension Test should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs.
Until then we can recommend using public information symbol No 162 of ÖNORM A 3011 part 10 shown below, or a similar graphical symbol, to indicate the location of facilities offering beauty care services.
