Discussion
Almost all pictograms found show a sectional view of camera booth with human figure on stool. Variations are mostly limited to the way the camera is rendered and whether the camera containment is shown in outline or not. In some cases lines are added indicating the angle of view and therefore how much of the person will be captured.
In our research we discovered that there is only very limited test data available for this referent:
Brugger (1990) examined the two pictograms marked 1) and 2) in the table above using a Comprehension Test. Applying lenient scoring variant 1) reached 67.3 % correct responses and variant 2) 81.0 %. Wrong answers were among others TV, Movie Screening, Oculist or Ophthalmologist, and X-ray.
Recommendations
Based on test results available we recommend the use of a pictogram like Public Information Symbol No 123 of ÖNORM A 3011 Part 7 to signify Photo Booth. Maybe adding a slot for picture output below the camera similar to the variant from Prontophot could further improve comprehensibility.
