Discussion

Besides the rather device independent pictograms conforming to the image content of ISO 7001 public information symbol PI PF 075, variants displaying specific hand dryers can be found quite often. A few pictograms just show one or two hands below several wavy lines indicating the warm air from the dryer.

Data from tests is sparse, as only a single pictogram was examined:

The pictogram from the Chinese standard GB/T 10001.1-2012, Public Information Graphical Symbols, labeled CNIS in the table above, was understood well in a Comprehension Test with 95 % correct responses among Chinese respondents (ISO/TC 145/SC 1, 2015).

Recommendations

Regarding the test results available we recommend using a pictogram displaying an open rectangle with several parallel vertical wavy lines and a hand below similar to this example pictogram from the Chinese standard GB/T 10001.1-2012, Public Information Graphical Symbols. This pictogram is comprehensible for most persons and suitable for all kinds of hand dryers, as it does not display a specific hand dryer design.
