Discussion
The number of pictograms that we found in our database concerning this referent is quite limited. Besides renderings showing a skateboarder cruising or performing a trick, one can also find pictograms including some kind of ramp or obstacle. All concepts found include a rendering of a skateboard as characteristic element, facilitating a clear identification of this kind of sports.
We could not find any research data concerning graphic symbols for skateboarding or facilities for skateboarding in our database, so we cannot present specific information concerning comprehensibility or some other parameters for one or several of the pictograms presented above. All we can say is that we expect the variant designed for the Summer Olympics in Paris 2024 to be rather incomprehensible.
Recommendations
Due to the fact that no data from research is available, we recommend testing using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure for eliminating poor variants and identifying the best of the set available, followed by a Comprehension Test. These studies should deliver useful data for recommending the best pictogram. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories of the Comprehension Test should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs. Also information concerning knowledge about this type of activity should be collected at the end of the test, as respondents might not be familiar with Skateboarding.
