Discussion
The collection above illustrates the range of pictograms available in our pool. Many of these are from Olympic Winter Games, and basically there are only variations of two concepts: showing a human figure with ice skates holding a hockey stick, optionally also with a rendering of a puck, and as second image content two crossed hockey sticks are displayed, with the puck in the middle below.
In our research we discovered that test results on hand for Ice Hockey in our database are regarding one pictogram only:
The information found does not include any detailed data, but there are some facts concerning comprehensibility available for the pictogram of the Parks Canada Identity Program (2007): since all pictograms that failed comprehension testing in Canada have been retired from use there, the Parks Canada pictogram 6-4-308: Ice Hockey displayed above must have reached a comprehension rate of 80 % or higher, as this variant does not have the status Retired and does not have to be accompanied by a supportive text message.
Recommendations
Due to the fact that data from research is sparse, we recommend to start testing using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure for eliminating poor variants and identifying the best of the set available, followed by a Comprehension Test. These studies should deliver useful data for recommending the best pictogram. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories of the Comprehension Test should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs. Also information concerning knowledge about this kind of sport should be collected at the end of the test, as the degree of familiarity with the referent examined has a significant impact on the validity of the data collected.
Until then we can recommend using a pictogram displaying a side view of a moving human figure with ice skates, holding a hockey stick similar to the Parks Canada or CNIS variants shown below, but a clear differentiation from Hockey should be ensured, and care should be taken to avoid similarities with a human figure in putting posture when playing Golf or Minigolf.
