Discussion
The collection above indicates the existence of a visual stereotype for Horseback Riding: a side view of a horse with a rider or equestrian.
In our research we discovered that there is only very limited test data available for the referent Horseback Riding:
When Gehringer (1976) examined six variants for the referent Riding in an Appropriateness Ranking Test, a pictogram depicting a side view of a horse with a rider or equestrian - identical to the stereotype mentioned before - was ranked first. Variants showing just a horseshoe or the head and neck of a horse like the pictograms at the end of the table above were seen as less appropriate.
58.9 % of the answers were classified as correct when Fiori (2008) examined a map symbol showing a side view of a running horse with rider. As the referent in the case of this study was Horse Racing, many answers found among the 36.1 % wrong responses could be classified as correct for the referent Horse Riding.
Recommendation
Based on test results available and also regarding design aspects we recommend the use of symbol No 95 Horse Riding of ÖNORM A 3011 Part 4.
