Discussion
The collection above does not offer much variation concerning the image contents, and it also reveals the close relationship to the message Picnic Area.
This relationship also appears in the theses of Fiori (2008), where the referents Park and Picnic Area are treated as a single referent. Comprehension Test data for a variant similar to the Brazilian pictogram labeled with *) offers some insight: 77.2 % of the responses were judged as correct, and most answers were related to Park and Public Open Space. Picnic Area is not listed among the most frequent responses, as this message usually is induced by also displaying a table. The answer Farm was prevalent among the wrong resposes.
In a Japanese study to propose domestically unified graphical symbols based on scientific methods, the pictogram variant labeled as Eco-Mo Foundation proved to be well comprehensible with a comprehension score of 84.1 (Eco-Mo Foundation, 2001).
Recommendation
Based on the test results detailed above we recommend the use of a variant similar to Public Information Symbol PI TC 006 of ISO 7001.
