Discussion

Several pictograms relating to shooting in the table above are from Summer Olympic Games, which often had more than ten different shooting events. The range of pictograms shown in the table above already indicate a problem arising when the messages Shooting and Hunting are combined as one referent, as some organizations or designers do: persons hunting are a subgroup of persons shooting, and there are several different types of shooting. So it seems this referent should be split up into at least two separate referents:

  1. Shooting, addressing the general public, but also sometimes very specific, as for example shown in BS 8501 public information symbol No 9010: Clay Pigeon Shooting.
  2. Hunting, is more specific, and in many countries persons have to prove a special training to get a license for hunting.

But such a differentiation again has to be made carefully, as for example just showing deer for Hunting might be confused with other messages like Wildlife Park or Deer Stalking.

Data from tests is rather insufficient:

Gehringer (1976) examined the five pictogram variants for the referent Hunting Area in an Appropriateness Ranking Test. A pictograms showing the side view of some deer in the crosshairs was judged as most appropriate. The numbers 1) to 4) represent the final rank order of the best symbols tested.

Recommendations

Due to the limited data available and insufficient knowledge of relevant factors, we recommend conducting an exact analysis of the communication needs and possible user groups of this information. On such a basis research using the Comprehensibility Estimation procedure and Comprehension Tests will deliver useful data for recommending one or several pictograms. Detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories should be provided to correctly judge comprehensibility and improve designs.
