Discussion

The collection shown above is only a small selection of the wide variety of pictograms for Chairlift used all over the world. We did not include graphical symbols referring to chair lifts with more than four seats.

A few studies present research covering several pictogram variants for this referent. These papers offer some useful information:

In a comparison of ten variants based on an Appropriateness Ranking Test (Brugger, 1977), pictograms showing a seated person were seen as significantly more appropriate than variants displaying just the empty chairs.

All variants tested for comprehension in an Austrian sample (the pictograms marked with *, Brugger, 1977) reached 70 % or more correct responses. With 88 % correct answers the pictogram labeled FGSW 73 was best. The variant from Erco had the largest number of wrong answers, mostly related to skiing. This indicates that the person shown should not be displayed as skier, especially if the chair lift is not intended for skiers only.

Fiori (2008) examined a map symbol showing a side view of a human figure seated on a chair suspended from inclined cable using a Comprehension Test conducted in Brazil. 76.5 % of the responses were classified as correct. Even though no skis were displayed, some answers were related to skiing.

Recommendation

Tern Pictogram TS0172, TS0173 Chair lift

Based on the test results known we recommend the use of an improved variant of public information symbol No 46 of ÖNORM A 3011 part 2 and the corresponding variant PI TF 013 of ISO 7001: Tern pictogram TS0172, TS0173 Chair lift.

For indicating the number of seats of a chair lift with more than one seat we recommend using the corresponding Tern symbols available:

Tern Pictogram TS0174, TS0175 Chair lift – 2 seats   Tern Pictogram TS0176, TS0177 Chair lift – 3 seats   Tern Pictogram TS0178, TS0179 Chair lift – 4 seats
