Discussion
The collection above already illustrates that most variants just display a side view of a typical beer glass with handle, and often excess foam is used to indicate beer as content of the glass.
In our research we discovered that there is only very limited test data available for the referent Beer or Brewery:
Fiori (2008) examined a map symbol for Brewery, showing a side view of glass of beer with handle, lines and excess foam similar to the map symbol labeled as Fiori R in the table above, using a Comprehension Test conducted in Brazil. Only 20.1 % of the responses in a Comprehension Test were classified as correct. Answers reported were Brewery, Draft Beer, Pub, Bar, and Milk Shake, but no information about response class assignments or categorization is available. We assume that some of the responses were done quickly and did not express the meaning in an exact manner, so real comprehension rate should probably be significantly higher.
Recommendations
We suggest to study more pictograms than the one tested in the paper available, including all basic concepts shown above and possibly an improved redesign based on the variants displaying excess foam. Such a project should also include a Comprehension Test where context information is provided, too. Availability of detailed information about the most frequent responses given in each of the response categories is of foremost importance to correcly judge comprehensibility and improve designs.
