Discussion
The set of symbols above already indicates that no single visual stereotype exists concerning the message Badminton. Designs range from all kinds of renderings of players with or without net and/or birdie to solutions just showing a shuttlecock.
In our research we did not discover any test data on comprehensibility or appropriateness of pictograms to indicate the location of facilities for playing badminton.
Designing or selecting a pictogram for Badminton, care has to be taken to ensure a clear differentiation from other racket sports like Squash and Tennis, something some designers do not even intend (e.g. have a look at the Picto'grafics pictogram in the table above by Paul Arthur).
Recommendations
We suggest to develop additional pictogram variants, including designs also showing the net on basis of two lines as in the first pictogram of the table above. Then studies comparing several or all concepts should be conducted. The study design should also include a Comprehension Test to identify possible misinterpretations including the differentiation from other racket sports like Squash and Tennis and to collect information on how to improve designs. Only on such a basis a clear decision concerning a specific recommendation can be reached.
Until then nothing is to be said against using variants similar to the variant from the Chinese standard GB/T 10001 as we expect comprehensibility of this pictogram to fulfill ISO requirements.
